Think Safety This Season: Download the LiveSafe App Today!

November 2, 2023 / General NOVA News

You know how the saying goes: Spring forward, fall back! That’s right, this weekend — at precisely 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, November 5 — we’ll turn the clocks back one hour, marking the return to Standard Time (ST) until early March 2024, when we resume Daylight Saving Time (DST).

We all know what comes with turning the clocks back: cooler, crisper air; the final countdown to the end of the semester; and earlier sunsets. That means more of us will be walking to our cars, ride-shares or the bus stop in near or total darkness. Did you know you can request an escort from the NOVA Police Department through the LiveSafe App?

It’s true: NOVA PD offers a slew of tools and info via LiveSafe, including no-questions-asked escort and motorist assist requests, to NOVA faculty, staff and students. The upcoming change to Standard Time is a great opportunity for a refresher on this powerful mobile application that compiles critical safety resources in a single, convenient location.

LiveSafe, available for free in both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store, is essentially a “menu” of safety resources for the NOVA community. Through the app, you can easily dial 911 or contact NOVA PD via phone or text. You can also access an array of step-by-step emergency procedures, from steps to take in the event of a fire to safety tips for inclement weather. Further, users can enable the application’s SafeWalk feature to share their location with family and friends.

And these are just some of LiveSafe’s capabilities. Additional features include a safety map, which identifies nearby police stations, fire stations and hospitals; a door unlock request for NOVA faculty and staff (again, no questions asked!); relevant push notifications; and a virtual tip line, through which users can report incidents of all kinds — motor vehicle accidents, thefts and more — at the touch of a button.

Learn more about LiveSafe here, and take some time to explore the app once you’ve downloaded it on your smart device. And remember to tell your students about the app, as well. Note that when you open the newly downloaded app, you’ll need to select “NOVA” from the list of organizations and also add your name and contact information.

Download LiveSafe to help keep yourself and the rest of the Nighthawk community safe this season and always!

The chief, wearing his dark blue police uniform, points to a poster on the wall that reads "EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS" in large red letters at the top. Below the red text are instructions for downloading the LiveSafe application. Williams, wearing dark glasses and a long black dress with small white polka dots, holds an iPhone displaying the home screen of the LiveSafe app, which features three rectangles — red, blue and purple — stacked vertically.
