November 8, 2023 / Events

NOVA’s Alexandria Campus is pleased to welcome Washington Post Columnist Courtland Milloy as speaker for the 2023 Joseph Windham Lecture on Race Relations. This event will be held on Thursday, Nov. 9, from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the Alexandria Campus (AA-196). If you have questions about this event or need accommodations, Contact AL Campus and Community Relations Coordinator Marcus Henderson at MHenderson@nvcc.edu.

This annual education event focuses on hearing from a speaker on the importance of civic education and the intersection of diversity, equity and inclusion in a specific career field. This year, the LASS Division on the AL Campus welcomes Courtland Milloy. Milloy began writing for newspapers as a high school student in 1967. He learned the craft from his father, who taught journalism and graphic arts, and his mother, who taught typing and shorthand, both at Booker T. Washington High School in Shreveport, La. Milloy came to The Washington Post from the Miami Herald in 1975. He has also written for The Post’s Style and Foreign sections and for The Washington Post Magazine. In 1983, he began writing a column, which runs most Wednesdays.

The Joseph Windham Series on Race Relations honors NOVA’s beloved professor of history who passed away in 2014 after a battle with cancer. A native of New York, Windham earned a master’s degree in history from Ohio State University and a doctorate in history from Howard University. He taught at NOVA for 22 years and was an assistant dean of liberal arts. Joe Windham is dearly missed and fondly remembered.
