NOVA Thanks Those Who Have Served on Veterans Day

November 10, 2023 / General NOVA News

For more than 20 years, NOVA has provided services to those who have served in the military, with the official Office of Military and Veterans Services (OMVS) opening in 2010. Over the years, many dedicated staff members have worked to provide comprehensive resources to veterans and military-related personnel who are using the GI Bill® and its educational benefits.

As you know, here at NOVA, it is our privilege to assist veterans and military-affiliated family members in taking advantage of the numerous educational opportunities available through the GI Bill and other programs. Our institution is approved to offer GI Bill educational benefits by the Virginia State Approving Agency.

Feel free to always refer students to OMVS, which provides comprehensive resources to veterans and military-related personnel who are utilizing VA and tuition assistant educational benefits. Whether you are a new student, a returning student or transferring to NOVA from another institution, we’re here to help you find the resources you need to make the most of your time here at NOVA.

Hear from some of our veteran students over the years here.

Please enjoy anecdotes and memories shared by our faculty, staff and community partners:
“We are always here to support our veteran students,” said Dr. Takesha McMiller, interim associate vice president for student support services. “Our Office of Military and Veterans Services has seen so many students succeed, from those who have served to their dependents and military spouses. Our mission continues, and I am proud of the team here at NOVA.”

“I work with some of the best people on the planet in my department,” said Dr. Latoya Sivells, assistant director of military benefits at NOVA and past president of the Virginia Advisory Council on Military Education. “I say that because — no matter who has come out of our department — every single person has a passion for helping the veteran and military population.”

“I was looking into schools, and although George Mason popped up a lot during my research, NOVA felt like a more friendly environment fresh after the military,” said Luis Charboneau, military and veterans program advisor at NOVA. “I was a part of the Veterans Club when I attended NOVA. Even as a student veteran, I was helping other interested veterans who wanted to come to the College.”

“Veterans Day means to me, an appreciation of all those who served, including the families and friends who sacrificed so much,” said Terri Payne, VA school certifying official at NOVA. “Many people don’t recognize the commitments and sacrifices that these members have had to make, some with their lives. It is the Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, and Coast Guard members who make Veterans Day what it is today. Thank you for your service to all the veterans and families who deserved to be recognized for the protection that they have provided for years.”
