Resources for Advising NOVA’s Engineering Students

November 13, 2023 / Faculty/Staff Highlights

Engineering is an in-demand field with growth projected in a number of areas within the field, including mechanical, civil, agricultural, environmental and biomedical engineering. NOVA’s A.S. in Engineering provides students with an “on ramp” to these degrees and careers.

Student advising for engineering can be remarkably complex due to the various transfer pathways and possible four-year institutions. To help students, advisors and faculty better navigate the choices within the A.S. Engineering, the Engineering Discipline has put in place a number of helpful resources:

  • Engineering faculty (Rudy Napisa (AN), David Lin (AN) and Nina Lord (MA)) launched NOVA C.O.R.E. (Community of Rising Engineers), an NSF grant–funded program that provides students with scholarships to pursue engineering. Learn more about NOVA C.O.R.E. here.
  • NOVA’s Engineering Blog, developed by NOVA engineering faculty and maintained by Professor Alexander Bohn (AN), provides students with an opportunity to explore and compare the different engineering programs at senior institutions, along with detailed information on how NOVA’s A.S. Engineering applies to a variety of engineering disciplines.
  • All students program placed in the A.S. Engineering degree are enrolled in a Canvas site that provides student resources, such as transfer course equivalencies, scholarship opportunities and more. Professor Bohn sends students timely information through this site to keep our engineering students apprised of upcoming events. Professor Bohn also serves as an engineering advising subject matter expert, providing students, advisors and faculty with guidance on engineering advising–related questions.
  • Professor Nina Lord (MA) recently launched NOVA’s Engineering Instagram account (egr_at_NOVA) to highlight our NOVA CORE students and upcoming events.
