The Passing of Dr. Sheri David

November 28, 2023 / General NOVA News

It is with great sorrow that we announce the recent passing of Professor Emerita Sheri David. Dr. David taught in the History Department on NOVA’s Manassas Campus from 1988 until 2017. An outstanding classroom teacher with an extensive record of service to the College, Dr. David also had an impressive record of publication and professional development. As an educator, she was a fierce advocate for community colleges and their role in serving students and their communities. During her three decades at NOVA, Dr. David’s service included frequent membership on the College Senate, virtually every major College committee, the Manassas Campus Council and numerous campus committees.

Dr. David was also a serious and productive scholar. Her book, With Dignity: The Search for Medicare and Medicaid, remains one of the most important studies ever published on the creation of these critical government programs. She also authored several other publications and made numerous scholarly presentations on topics ranging from the presidency of Gerald Ford to America’s involvement in the Vietnam War. In recognition of Dr. David’s significant contributions to the College, her students and the historical profession, she was honored by NOVA’s Alumni Foundation with its Faculty of the Year Award. That she was named a 1993 national Fulbright Scholar provided additional recognition of Dr. David’s substantive career of teaching and research.

Dr. David requested that any contributions in her memory be made to the NOVA Foundation. She is survived by her two sons, Dr. Matthew David and Dr. Ryan David; their wives, Michelle Land and Dr. Hiroko David, respectively; and four grandchildren. A memorial service for colleagues and friends will be held on January 19, 2024, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. in the Colgan Theater on the Manassas Campus.
