NOVA Students Present at Syracuse University Conference

December 13, 2023 / Our Nighthawks

Dr. Joel Harrison, professor of religion at NOVA’s Manassas Campus, attended a conference at Syracuse University last week. “The Religious Origins of White Supremacy: Johnson v McIntosh and the Doctrine of Christian Discovery” featured presentations by three of Harrison’s former students — Christian Oppenhagen, Jason Armstrong and Rachel Neuburger. Harrison encouraged students in his REL-100 class to submit papers for review. The conference organizers considered many excellent final papers from the class, and Oppenhagen, Armstrong and Neuburger were invited to present at the conference, which was attended by scholars and activists from around the world. Through practical workshops, the conference examined the ways religion has contributed to the ideologies of white supremacy, particularly during the colonial era through the Early National Period.
