NOVA Police Launch Secure-It or Lose-It Initiative to Help Prevent Property Theft

January 11, 2024 / General NOVA News

NOVA Police wish the NOVA community a happy new year and welcome back for a new semester! With the start of a new semester, NOVA Police would like to take this opportunity to launch an awareness initiative called Secure-it or Lose-it. This initiative is designed to remind you to secure your valuables and personal belongings. NOVA provides a very safe and inviting environment for students, faculty and staff. Unfortunately, some people take advantage of this environment and come into our community to commit crimes.

More recently, NOVA Police have been working on some larceny cases involving property that was taken while it was left unattended. Property thefts are not uncommon in large public areas like a college. Most thefts are viewed as “crimes of opportunity” by police; meaning a crime is more likely to be committed by an offender when it offers high rewards with low risk. As a community, we can easily reduce these crimes by securing our property and eliminating the opportunity for an offender to commit theft.

In the coming weeks, NOVA Police officers will be promoting this initiative by engaging our community and educating them by placing tent cards in common areas and offices. These will serve as reminders for our community to be aware of your surroundings and to guard your valuables.

If you would like to learn more about the Secure-it or Lose-it initiative or would like some tent cards to help promote it, please contact Lieutenant Tony Ong at TOng2@nvcc.edu.
