Virtual Roundtable on Credit-Bearing Internships, Jan. 12 (Corrected Date)
Students at NOVA are eligible to earn college credit while completing an internship. This is particularly helpful (and in some cases required) for students in our Career Studies Certificate, Certificate and Associate of Applied Science programs. Many students do not realize that there is an academic component when enrolling in the internship course. Students meet with a faculty member who teaches the course and complete assignments related to their internship. This is what sets earning credit for the internship apart from a student simply completing an internship on their own.
Over the past few years, faculty who teach XXX-190, 196, 197, 290, 296 and 297 have come together to discuss challenges and successes in administering the courses. This week, we have another opportunity to share thoughts, triumphs and concerns at a virtual roundtable. Any faculty members or deans who work with internship programs are encouraged to attend. In addition, anyone interested in possibly offering a credit-bearing internship in the future is also welcome to attend. The Internship Virtual Roundtable will be held tomorrow, January 12, from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Zoom.
If you know a student who is interested in registering for an internship course, they should first secure an internship. After securing the internship, the student should send a resume; job description on company letterhead; and NOVA forms 125-037, 125-038 and 125-040 to Kristy Balbuena at KBalbuena@nvcc.edu. After checking for completeness, Kristy forwards the forms to the Pathway Dean for approval and course creation. This process can take some time, so students should submit all documents no later than five weeks before the start of the session.
