Spring 2024 Nighthawk BE FLY (Fit, Lean You) Fitness Challenges
NOVA’s Recreation Department and Office of Employee Wellness and Wellbeing are here to support your physical health! This year, we’ll be offering a series of monthly challenges, each focusing on one aspect of physical fitness.
From today, January 19, through February 23, we’ll be hosting our 6-WEEK WEIGHT-MONITORING CHALLENGE to kick off the year and help you shed those holiday pounds. Biweekly motivational emails will be sent to keep you on track. To participate, please email us at campusrec@nvcc.edu, and we’ll add you to the email list.
In FEBRUARY, we’ll emphasize upper-body strength through the PUSHUP CHALLENGE. Participants will do pushups every other day, starting with 5 pushups on Day 1 and gradually increasing to 75 pushups by the end of the month. Pushups are a great way to improve strength and endurance in the chest, shoulders and triceps. Adequate rest and recovery are essential for this strength-building challenge, which gets progressively intense each day!
With the arrival of beautiful spring weather (we hope!) in MARCH, we’re aiming to elevate your fitness routine with the 45 MILES/30 DAYS CHALLENGE. This challenge builds on the previous fall challenge but sets a new target, averaging 1.5 miles per day.
Moving into APRIL, we introduce the 30 MINUTES OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY A DAY/30 DAYS CHALLENGE. You can choose your activities, but it’s crucial to record them on your monthly calendar for accountability. Whether it’s weightlifting, walking your dog, participating in Rec on Canvas Yoga or Zumba, mowing the lawn, playing golf without a cart, or swimming — the choice is yours! Weekly reminders will be sent to help you stay on track.
In MAY, we present our 3rd ANNUAL BODYWEIGHT BENCH PRESS CHALLENGE, scheduled for Wednesday, May 1. Take a break from the stress of final exams to do some weightlifting. The challenge — which involves determining how many times you can bench press your body weight — is a valuable indicator of your relative strength, assessing upper-body strength and muscular endurance.
