Healthy Weight Week: Know Your Numbers

National Healthy Weight Week is observed during the third week of January. This weeklong celebration, inaugurated in 1994, is dedicated to understanding the importance of maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle. Managing your weight contributes to good health now and as you age. 

This week, NOVA’s Office of Employee Wellness and Wellbeing (OEWW) encourages you to take small steps to reach and maintain a healthy weight. Today’s National Healthy Weight Week tip is to Know your numbers.

Yellow circle with white droplet: Blood Sugar. The amount of sugar (glucose) in your blood. What should my numbers be? Before eating: Less than 100. Two hours after eating: Less than 140.
Light blue circle with blood pressure cuff: Blood Pressure. This is the force of blood against the arteries when the heart beats (top number) and rests (bottom number). What should my number be? Less than 120 over 80.  
Purple circle with spoon, form, and knife: Blood Cholesterol. Cholesterol is a waxy substance produced by the liver. Too much can make it harder for blood to circulate. What should my number be? Total score less than 200.
Green circle with scale: Body Weight. Your ideal body weight varies by gender, age, height and frame. BMI provides a good guideline. What should my number be? BMI 18 point 6 to 24 point 9.
