Healthy Weight Week: Physical Activity

January 24, 2024 / Get Well

Welcome to another day of National Healthy Weight Week! Today’s tip is to activate an effective physical activity plan. Incorporating physical activity into your daily life doesn’t have to be a grand gesture: All movement is good movement! With easy access to ample resources in our area, you can take steps today to boost your physical activity at work, at home or while out in the community. Move Your Way!

  • Get a move on. Take an energetic stroll through the halls, or consider a leisurely stroll through a campus art gallery. And when the weather allows, walk our beautiful campus trails.
  • Step it up. Take the stairs whenever possible: at the office, at home, while running errands — you name it. Climbing stairs throughout the day not only burns extra calories but also helps you form healthy habits. After all, the more you move, the easier it is to maintain a healthy weight.
  • NOVA’s Recreation Department can always be counted on for fresh new offerings. Check out this semester’s Be FLY (FIT, LEAN[ER], YOU)! Challenges.
  • The Washington, DC, area arts scene is not to be missed. Visit the many galleries and museums in our area and soak up the culture from the past, present and future. What a fun way to get in some movement!
  • Wellness partner AARP is available around the clock with fun opportunities; check out this Fat-Burning Indoor Walking Workout with Denise Austin.
  • The Kennedy Center also provides around-the-clock access to recorded music and dance experiences with world-class performers on its Millennium Stage. Join them and bust a move! Here are a couple to try:
    • Joy of Motion. Experience Zumba and samba fusion with Tanya Nuchols.
    • Taiko Drumming and Dance. Thundering taiko drumming meets traditional Japanese dance as nearly 30 drummers and dancers from Tamagawa University take the stage.

Leveling Up:

  • As the weather allows, grab a few of your favorite people (or pets!) to participate in Virginia State Parks’ Opt Outside campaign. Virginia State Parks have a tradition of encouraging families and friends to get outdoors together, so take some time to indulge in nature. Doing so can help you reduce stress and make memories!
  • Know before you go:
    • Be prepared to enjoy and explore safely. Check the park’s website for weather advisories, and be sure to dress appropriately (e.g., rain gear, sturdy footwear, multiple layers, etc.).
    • Find an event you’re interested in.
    • While you’re there, you can start your Virginia State Parks Trail Quest. Trail Quest is a self-paced program that rewards you for visiting Virginia State Parks. Virginia has 42 state parks, with 40 offering the Trail Quest program.
    • Finally, go ahead and mark your calendar for NOVA’s Spring 2024 Walk Week (April 1–5).

Happy Healthy Weight Week!

Immediately below "MOVE" are the words "Your Way" (in lime green and white, slightly smaller font). On top of the word "MOVE" are small stick figures, in white, performing various forms of exercise: walking, gardening, pushing a baby in a stroller, lifting weights, playing basketball, and jumping rope.
