Reminder: DEI Common Read Featuring “Just Mercy” Continues This Semester
This is a friendly reminder that our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Common Read is still in full swing this spring! Our inaugural read is the thought-provoking book Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson. As we dive into the heart of the semester, we want to ensure everyone has the opportunity to engage with this impactful work. If you haven’t already, be sure to pick up your free copy of Just Mercy at your campus library. We have plenty of copies available, in both physical and electronic formats. If you are recommending the book for use in your courses, please instruct students to pick up their copies directly from the library.
Don’t miss out on the chance to join the ongoing discussions about this moving book. It’s a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow community members and explore the themes of justice, equality and diversity. The DEI Common Read is all about fostering meaningful conversation and creating a shared experience within our community.
Opportunities for Engagement:
- Book Distribution: Free copies of Just Mercy are ready for pickup at the campus libraries.
- Discussion Groups: We are looking for folks to lead thoughtful conversations across our campuses and virtually! If you are interested, please contact Dr. Sherrene DeLong at SDeLong@nvcc.edu.
- Special Event: Save the date (Thurs., Feb. 29, 10 a.m. until 11 a.m.) for a special event featuring Anthony Ray Hinton, whose story was captured in Just Mercy. Find more info here.
- Trip to Montgomery, Ala.: The Office of Student Leadership and Engagement is sponsoring a trip to Equal Justice Initiative sites in Montgomery, Alabama. Ten students and two faculty chaperones have been selected for this trip through an application process. Stay tuned for events featuring the participants, who will share about their experiences later this semester.
Let’s keep the momentum going and make this semester a time of reflection and shared learning. We appreciate your participation in the DEI Common Read and look forward to the impactful conversations it will continue to inspire.
