Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities Welcomes New Director
Please join the Student Affairs team in welcoming our newest colleague, Matthew Coats, Director of the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities. Matthew comes to NOVA with 15 years of supervisory and leadership experience in higher education. He has served in comparable roles as Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards, Case Manager (Care Team), BASICS Facilitator for alcohol and drug violations, Conduct Hearing Officer, and Assistant Director for Student Life and Accommodations/Community Director at various higher education institutions in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Matthew has completed training in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), Maxient, Safe Zone and Mental Health First Aid. He is also a member of the Association for Student Conduct Administration.
Matthew received an Associate of Arts from Tidewater Community College, a Bachelor of Science in psychology with a minor in criminal justice from Old Dominion University, and a Master of Science in counselor education with a concentration in student affairs administration from Radford University. Matthew spent the past eight years at Shenandoah University as Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards before coming to NOVA.
