“All About the Blues: A Celebration of Black History Month,” Feb. 21

February 14, 2024 / Music, Arts & Other Pretty Stuff

The Annandale Lyceum Committee presents a guest speaker series event, “All About the Blues: A Celebration of Black History Month.” This event will be held on Wednesday, February 21, from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. on the Annandale Campus (CA-302). This is a hybrid event, available both in person and online, but refreshments will be served to those attending in person.

Our guest speaker will be Chicago blues musician and historian Mr. Fruteland Jackson. The event will be moderated by Ms. Connie Robinson of Enrollment Management and Scheduling at NOVA’s Annandale Campus.

In his presentation, Jackson will discuss the origins of the blues. Beginning in the nation’s dark days of slavery, blues music has evolved to embrace all races and ethnicities, ultimately becoming one of society’s first and most successful examples of diversity. Jackson will also explore the positive impact blues has had in America. “All About the Blues” is a journey, and we invite you to join us for our 2024 Black History Month celebration showcasing Jackson’s amazing work with Blues in the Schools to help keep the blues alive!

Jackson taught himself how to play various instruments, including the acoustic guitar, banjo and other stringed instruments. He has focused on mastering the classic styles of great blues and ragtime pioneers such as Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Memphis Minnie, Elizabeth Cotten and others.
