CommonHealth Weekly Wellnote: February 17 Is Random Acts of Kindness Day

February 16, 2024 / Get Well

How can your Virginia State Employee Wellness Program help? The CommonHealth programs and campaigns cover a variety of health topics and are available in a range of formats to meet the needs of different workplaces. Highly skilled wellness consultants provide the latest on stress, sleep, nutrition, exercise and more for faculty/staff meetings, special events, conferences, benefit fairs, safety meetings, lunch and learns, etc. They provide traditional, in-person presentations and displays as well as virtual presentations, on-demand videos and seasonal health-related challenges that are fun and engaging. Visit the website to see how CommonHealth can help you! If you’re looking to book an event in March, April or May, connect sooner rather than later to ensure you get a date that works for you.

Check out this week’s updates from CommonHealth.

Keep these facts about germs in mind so that you can make sure you're doing
everything you can to protect yourself and your family against cold and flu:
- Cold and flu germs can live on surfaces for up to two days.
- The flu virus is heat sensitive and multiplies quicker when it's cooler.
- Colds and flu usually start in nasal passageways and spread from there.
- The majority of people who catch a cold or the flu do so by touching their
eyes, nose, or mouth with infected hands.
- The flu typically lies dormant for about three days before symptoms appear.

We can better protect ourselves and others from colds and flu when we all work together to limit the spread of germs. Contact your CommonHealth agency coordinator (or HR benefits administrator) to schedule a Stay Well presentation, and gather your team to learn how to help each other avoid germs, boost health, and feel better faster when illness strikes.

Momentum: The Secret to Maintaining Your Healthy Habits
Thursday, February 29, 1:00 p.m.
Join our wellness partner Weight Watchers for a free webinar to discuss a new way to think about making changes. Focus on building momentum instead of relying on motivation.

A LITTLE BIT HEALTHIER THIS WEEK (with cartoon drawings of hands at bottom reaching up holding pink hearts)
Random Acts of Kindness Day is February 17! Take time this week to complete a random act of kindness (RAK). Both the recipient and you will benefit from an increase in oxytocin, a hormone released when completing or receiving an RAK. It helps lower blood pressure, increase optimism and self-esteem, and improve heart health. See the attachment for RAK ideas, and spread some kindness this week!
