Faculty, Student Surveys to Provide Valuable Strategic Insights

March 28, 2024 / General NOVA News

Beginning April 1, NOVA will again participate in the CCSSE. Students will receive email invitations to take the survey, with reminders sent at a regular pace until the CCSSE closes on May 8. Emails will come from OSI@nvcc.edu.

Since 2001, the CCSSE has been providing community colleges with an opportunity to learn more about student engagement in activities that research shows are key to their success. CCSSE questions capture a holistic look at students’ experiences, with a recognition that their success is driven by curricular and co-curricular activities in addition to the time required by personal responsibilities like work and family. You can review a sample of the CCSSE here.

NOVA has participated in the survey six times before, and you can find some of the reports on the results by searching the Office of Strategic Insights (OSI) website for “CCSSE.” This cycle, over 500 community colleges from 48 states are participating in the survey, which will provide NOVA a strong context for benchmarking our results.

We will also be participating once more in the Community College Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (CCFSSE) beginning April 1. This survey asks faculty for their perceptions about their students’ educational experiences and for information on their own teaching practices and professional engagement. Faculty will receive an email from ccfsse@ccsse.org with an invitation to participate. Survey responses go directly to CCSSE, which analyzes and anonymizes the resulting data before sending any reports to NOVA—so I encourage you to respond fully and honestly. You can review a sample of the CCFSSE here.

Our college has participated in the faculty survey four times in the past, and you can find some of the reports analyzing our results by searching the OSI website for “CCFSSE.”

OSI’s analyses of the April 2024 CCSSE and CCFSSE results will be published in the Daily Flyer this fall and archived on the OSI website. Please know that these important reports will not gather digital dust in the deep recesses of NOVA’s website. The CCSSE and CCFSSE results will provide valuable insights as NOVA continues to pursue our strategic goals of increasing student access, retention, completion, transfer and employment. We will use this data to support the success of our students and the professional growth of our faculty and staff by identifying (and sharing) areas of strength and opportunities for improvement.

Thank you, in advance, for completing the CCFSSE and for encouraging your students to complete the CCSSE! And my appreciation to the Office of Strategic Insights team, led by AVP Sam Shi, for their commitment to clarity and integrity in data reporting and information flow.
