Enjoy NOVA/Mason Student Art at Workhouse Arts Center. Artist Reception, April 13

Visit  the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, Va. to view Beyond, an exhibit of first- and second-year students from NOVA and George Mason University, hosted by the NOVA Educational Foundation and George Mason University Foundation. The juried exhibit will be on view through April 28 at the Workhouse Arts Center, McGuire Woods Gallery, Building W-16, 9518 Workhouse Way, Lorton. There will also be an artists’ reception on April 13, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

This exhibition of student work explores the multifaceted notions of freedom, play and experimentation. By juxtaposing these concepts against the backdrop of a former workhouse, Beyond aims to disrupt traditional narratives and spark a dialogue about the transformative power of art. Foundation level coursework asks students to stretch and learn from their mistakes to excel. The exhibition encourages students to challenge preconceived notions, break away from limitations, and share their journey to artistic self discovery.

All works included in the exhibition and awards are chosen by an outside juror. Our juror this year is Joseph Orzal.

From his website: Joseph Orzal is a Filipino-Mexican-American artist, curator and serial collaborator from Washington, D.C. He received his BFA from the Corcoran College of the Arts in 2010 and has been actively exhibiting since then. His works combine physical and emotional observations of the human state and mine the palpable yet unspoken intricacies of racial, sexual and class distinctions in Western societies. After his glorious departure from the Corcoran Gallery of Art, amidst his involvement with the Save the Corcoran group, with creative partner Nora Mueller, they co-founded NoMüNoMü, an intersectional artist collective and curatorial platform in Washington, D.C. working towards liberation from the perpetual systems of oppression and class domination that permeate throughout the art world.
