Spring Has Sprung, as Has Haiku Season!
As an annual reminder, April is both National Poetry Month and National Community College Month, so as regular readers know, this convergence can only mean one thing: a call for haiku!
As a reminder, haiku is a traditional Japanese poetic form with three lines. In English, the haiku convention for these lines is typically 5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables. The lines do not usually rhyme. Your haiku should follow this form.
The rules:
- Your haiku should celebrate something about NOVA: our inspiring students, talented colleagues, gorgeous grounds, cool labs, amazing arts, fantastic community or more. If there are “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird,” there have to be at least 73,000 ways of looking at NOVA.
- You can enter as many haiku as you wish, but your name will be entered into the drawing (see below) just once.
- Your deadline is 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 18.
- Send your entry to me at PresidentsOffice@nvcc.edu
I’ll select the five writers at random: each will receive a $25 donation made in their name to NOVA’s Day of Giving (not-so-coincidentally April 18) and an invitation to a group lunch, hosted by me.
As before, I will compile and publish all entries, meaning that you will have some great poems to read this spring! If you do not want your entry published, please let me know.
Thank you for the spirit of creativity and commitment to excellence that you bring to all you do!
Anne
