Last Call to Register for “Writing Ourselves In” Summer Institute, May 13 thru 15
There is still time to register for this year’s “Writing Ourselves In” Summer Institute! Please register by Friday, April 12.
NOVA’s “Writing Ourselves In” 2024 Summer Institute will be held Monday through Wednesday, May 13–15, at the Ernst Community Cultural Center on the Annandale Campus. The Institute will feature keynote speaker Dr. Vershawn (“Dr. Vay”) Ashanti Young. Register for the Institute here!
Dr. Vay is the author and editor of more than 10 books, including the textbook This Ain’t Yesterday’s Literacy: Culture and Education After George Floyd (2021, Fountainhead Press). He also held the highest office in the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC), the largest organization for teachers and scholars of college writing and communication, serving as Chair from 2018 to 2021. Dr. Vay is a diversity consultant to schools and organizations around the world. He has experience at all levels of education, and his former roles have included high school teacher, elementary school principal, school board administrator, and university administrator and full professor. Dr. Vay is currently the director of Black Studies at Ontario’s University of Waterloo, where he is also the chief grievance officer.
The 2024 “Writing Ourselves In” Summer Institute will include interactive workshops on problem-based learning (PBL) and transparent assignment design (TAD). This year, the Summer Institute looks forward to collaborating with our ESL colleagues! Not ENG or ESL faculty? No problem! We invite stakeholders (librarians, other faculty, staff and administrators) to attend, too. Previous participants are encouraged to come back and continue their professional learning.
Faculty will leave the institute with newly designed assignments for their ENG-111 and ESL courses, real ideas to increase students’ sense of belonging and engagement in class, strategies for integrating PBL and culturally responsive pedagogies, and happy vibes (we hope). Non-faculty stakeholders will come away with a deeper understanding of how writing is taught at NOVA and ideas for connecting and collaborating with colleagues across the College.
Part- and full-time teaching faculty will receive compensation for completing the Summer Institute.
