Volunteers Needed: Help Shape the Future of SDV-100 at NOVA!

April 18, 2024 / Faculty/Staff Highlights

We are excited to announce the formation of an ad hoc task force to enhance SDV-100: College Success Skills at NOVA. This is your chance to make a lasting impact on our students’ success! We are seeking dedicated volunteers to contribute their expertise and insights in the following areas:

  • 3 current SDV-100 instructors
  • 2 teaching faculty who teach first-semester courses other than SDV (e.g., CST, ENG, MTH)
  • 1 instructional designer

In addition to the co-chairs — AVP for Academic Affairs Jen Daniels and interim Associate Dean for Student Success Amy Zuaso — the committee will include two Senate appointees (Gillian Backus and Kelly DeSenti), the chair of the SDV discipline group (Mark Mannheimer) and an Academic Affairs liaison (Kristy Balbuena).

The task force will address crucial issues, such as:

  • Complying with VCCS Policy 6.4.0.3 Orientation/Student Development
  • Aligning SDV-100 curriculum with other VCCS institutions
  • Reducing the percentage of DFWs in SDV-100 (currently 23% to 30%)
  • Addressing the number of students seeking to waive SDV-100 as a graduation requirement
  • Integrating additional elements into SDV-100 (e.g., information on human trafficking and freedom of expression)

Recommendations are due to Dr. Kress by Friday, November 1.

If you are passionate about student success and want to contribute to this important project, we want to hear from you! To express your interest, please email Jen Daniels (JDaniels@nvcc.edu), Amy Zuaso (AZuaso@nvcc.edu) and Kristy Balbuena (KBalbuena@nvcc.edu) with a brief statement outlining your interest and role (i.e., SDV faculty, instructional designer, etc.).

The deadline to express your interest is Thursday, April 25. Don’t miss this opportunity to make a difference in our students’ lives!
