Micron to Launch Registered Apprenticeship Program with NOVA
On Thursday, April 24, Acting U.S. Secretary of Labor Julie Su, 20th District Representative to the Virginia House of Delegates Michelle Maldonado and the National Institute for Innovation and Technology President and CEO Mike Russo joined officials from semiconductor manufacturer Micron and NOVA to announce a registered apprenticeship program at Micron’s Manassas plant.
Launching this August, the apprenticeship program will give students the opportunity to gain experience in the industry, providing hands-on training and technical instruction designed for aspiring technicians. The company also covers the cost of a student’s education, pays them a competitive wage and offers full corporate benefits starting Day One, all while working around students’ current school schedule so apprentices can earn while they learn.
At the announcement event, NOVA’s Dr. Chad Knights moderated a conversation on workforce development aligned with the needs and priorities of our communities, industry and state and federal government agencies with Su; Russo; Micron’s April Arnzen, chief people officer; Delbert Parks, vice president, Micron Technology Virginia; NOVA President Anne M. Kress; and students Nada Anif, Jason Menjivar, Ephraim John and Giovanni Murcia. Maldonado; Carrie Roth, director, Virginia Works; and Dr. Michael Wooten, VCCS board member, also participated.
Leaders then joined Loudoun Campus Provost Dr. Julie Leidig and representatives from local political and economic offices to share information about the registered apprenticeship program and its anticipated impact on students, the College and the company.
