WO MSTB Event Champions Girls in STEM!

On Friday, April 19, the Woodbridge Campus MSTB Division hosted a Family STEM Event in collaboration with Pink Space Theory.

Dozens of third- and fifth-grade girls in the Prince William County Schools’ G.R.E.A.T. Math Minds program engaged in several STEM-focused activities presented by our fantastic faculty and staff:

  • Mohammad Arif (physics) dazzled students with hand boilers.
  • Shannon Werner, Idalia Rodriguez and Elena Ortiz (biology) and SACNAS students engaged participants in identifying lemurs.
  • Sara Mendoza (biology) and SACNAS students helped participants squish strawberries to extract DNA.
  • Kristy McDowell (biology) performed a cool and colorful experiment to demonstrate pressure.
  • Dan Burden (chemistry) amazed students with an experiment that turned dimes pink.
  • John Meeker (HVAC) impressed participants with thermal sensors.

While the girls participated in various activities, teachers, parents and older siblings learned more about NOVA’s programs, including dual enrollment, from Sandy Delgado with admissions outreach.

Sharing our passion for STEM with prospective future NOVA students was a fun, creative and engaging way to encourage young girls to pursue STEM careers. Check out the video and photos to see all the interactive, hands-on learning and activities for yourself!
