Maximum Pell Grants for Children of Deceased Service Members
The Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant is being phased out for the 2024-25 award year. It is being replaced with expanded Federal Pell Grant eligibility for certain children of deceased service members. Effective July 1, for the 2024-25 award year, a student may receive a Maximum Pell Grant, even if Federal Pell Grant eligibility does not exist based on the Student Aid Index if:
- the student meets the rest of the basic eligibility requirements for Federal Student Aid;
- the student’s parent or guardian died in the line of duty while either (a) serving on active duty as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces on or after September 11, 2001; or (b) actively serving as and performing the duties of a public safety officer; and
- the student is under 33 years old as of January 1, 2024.
To apply, students should submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at StudentAid.gov and submit any other items that may be requested on their myNOVA To Do List. More information about this program is available here.
