Kress’ Op-Ed Urges Employers to Think Outside the Degree!
NOVA President Anne M. Kress published an op-ed in PresidentsForum.org, also republished in Gazette Leader. “Think Outside the Degree” encourages employers to dial back the requirement for a four-year degree for the many highly qualified prospective employees who do not currently hold those degrees. Employers should instead move to skills-based hiring.
“Forty-five percent of Northern Virginia employers rarely or never accept equivalent experience in lieu of degrees,” she said. She encourages employers to “change where and how you look for talent, the way you assess candidates and how you partner with institutions dedicated to skilling, reskilling and upskilling workers in the fastest-growing fields. Seize the opportunity to think differently about your current, future and potential workforce. Think outside the degree.”
