History Reading Group Discussion “By Hands Now Known,” October 18

October 9, 2024 / Events

The History Reading Group will be discussing Margaret A. Burnham’s By Hands Now Known: Jim Crow’s Legal Executioners, on Friday, October 18, at 11 a.m. on the Annandale Campus (CN-102). All faculty and staff who have read the book are welcome to join us for a conversation about Professor Burnham’s remarkable book.

The History Reading Group is an informal group, like a book club for NOVA faculty and staff, that is focused on reading recent works by women of color. The focus is on works of history, and the goal is to use these books to provoke productive conversation about teaching and our efforts to promote diversity, equity and inclusion at NOVA. We look to foreground the work of women of color that can challenge us to understand systemic inequities, so that we may live up to the values we espouse. For teaching faculty, the books are meant as a possible pedagogical resource. For staff, the books are meant to provide insights we can use in our work.

We hope you will join us! Please be sure to read the book if you plan to join!
