NOVA PD Reminders to Protect Your Vehicle From Auto Theft

October 17, 2024 / General NOVA News

Auto theft continues to be a persistent issue in the Commonwealth of Virginia and across the nation, affecting countless individuals and communities. In light of this ongoing trend, NOVA Police would like to remind our community of the importance of safeguarding their vehicles. It’s crucial to ensure that your vehicle is securely locked and that no valuables are left inside, especially in plain view, as this can attract unwanted attention.

Follow these steps to help protect your vehicle from theft:

  1. Never leave your car running and unattended. This is a common mistake that thieves exploit, so always turn off your engine and take your keys with you.
  2. Don’t keep a key or key fob in your vehicle while unattended. Thieves look for easy access; leaving a key inside makes it far too easy for them to steal your car.
  3. Remove all valuables from your car. Items such as bags, electronics and even change can tempt thieves, so take them with you to eliminate risk.
  4. Always park in well-lit areas. Choosing well-lit and busy locations makes it less likely for thieves to target your vehicle, as they prefer dark, secluded spots.
  5. Ensure your windows are closed. Even slightly opened windows can provide an easy entry point for thieves, so make sure all windows are fully closed before leaving your vehicle.
  6. Use/install anti-theft devices when possible. Investing in steering wheel locks and alarms systems can deter potential thieves and increase the chance of recovering your vehicle if it’s stolen.
  7. Lock your car doors. It may seem obvious, but always double-check that your doors are locked before leaving your vehicle.
  8. Report all suspicious activities to the NOVA Police immediately by contacting us at 703-764-5000 or through our LiveSafe app.

By following these straightforward yet effective steps, you can significantly reduce the risk of auto theft and protect your investment. Stay vigilant and proactive; your safety and peace of mind are paramount.
