Monday Campaign Tip: Embrace Plant-Based Eating for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to focus on the impact of breast cancer and the importance of early detection and prevention. As we raise awareness, we also want to highlight the power of nutrition in promoting overall health and potentially reducing cancer risk.
Understanding Breast Cancer!
Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast. In 2024, it’s projected that more than 360,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer. However, there is hope. Advancements in early detection methods and support continue to increase the chances of survival. According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is caught early and in its localized stages, the five-year relative survival rate is an encouraging 99%.
Early detection for all is only possible through swift action. The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is dedicated to Helping Women Now®. The earlier we act, the bigger our impact — and your help is needed.
Here are some ways NOVA employees can support the NBCF’s Helping Women Now® and other Breast Cancer Awareness Campaigns:
- Join and Organize Fundraisers: Host events like bake sales, charity runs, or silent auctions to raise funds for breast cancer education and early detection services.
- Spread Awareness: Share educational materials and resources with colleagues and the community to promote the importance of early detection.
- Volunteer: Offer your time to support local breast cancer awareness events or initiatives, helping to provide crucial services to those in need.
- Donate: Contribute directly to help fund mammograms, patient navigation services, and educational programs.
- Wear Pink: Wear pink this month and share your support on social media to raise awareness and show solidarity with those affected by breast cancer.
Every action, no matter how small, can make a significant impact in the fight against breast cancer. For more details on breast cancer and/or Breast Cancer Awareness Campaigns, visit:

Plant-Based Eating for Breast Cancer Prevention
Dr. Kristi Funk, a board-certified breast surgeon and co-founder of the Pink Lotus Breast Center in Los Angeles< emphasizes the importance of plant-based eating for breast cancer prevention. Dr. Funk supports a science-baked strategy for cancer prevention that includes whole food plant-based eating.
She explains that consuming a plant-based diet protects the body from cancer cells, noting that over millennia, plants have developed weaponry to ward off disease and other predators. “Let me ask you this: if you were to eat plants, would their protective powers extend to you as a human? Of course, they would!”
Start with Meatless Monday!
Dr. Funk recommends starting with Meatless Monday as a manageable way to incorporate more plant-based meals into your diet. This approach aligns with her belief that small changes can translate into long-term health benefits.
In a recent video, Dr. Funk explained why Meatless Monday matters:
- Reducing meat consumption can lower the risk of various cancers and cardiovascular diseases.
- Starting with one meat-free day a week is a manageable approach to changing dietary habits.
- Many people report feeling healthier and more energized on meat-free days.
- Over time, individuals may be motivated to expand their meat-free days, gradually shifting toward a healthier balance.
- Even small changes, like one meat-free day a week, can have a profound impact on overall health and well-being.
This Week’s Tip: Embrace Plant-Based Eating for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, consider going meatless this Monday! Incorporating more fruits, vegetables and whole grains into your diet can help reduce the risk of cancer and improve overall health. Try swapping out meat for delicious alternatives like lentils, chickpeas or tofu in your favorite recipes. Small changes can make a big difference! Look for new plant-based recipes here in the Daily Flyer and on NOVA’s Healthy Nutrition Padlet.
