NOVA Police Reminds You to Protect Your Vehicle from Theft

Auto theft continues to be a persistent issue in the Commonwealth of Virginia and across the nation, affecting countless individuals and communities. In light of this continuing trend, NOVA Police would like to remind our community of the importance of safeguarding their vehicles from theft. It’s crucial to ensure that your vehicle is securely locked and that no valuables are left inside, and particularly in plain view, as this can attract unwanted attention.

To help protect your vehicle from theft, please consider these essential tips:

• Never leave your car running and unattended: This is a common mistake that thieves exploit, so always turn off your engine and take your keys with you.
• Do not keep a key or key fob in your vehicle while unattended: Thieves often look for easy access, and leaving a key inside can make it far too simple for them to steal your car.
• Remove all valuables from your car: Items such as bags, electronics and even change can tempt thieves, so take them with you to eliminate the risk.
• Always park in well-lit areas: Choosing well-lit and busy locations makes thieves less likely to target your vehicle, as they prefer dark, secluded spots.
• Ensure your windows are closed: Even slightly open windows can provide an easy entry point for thieves, so make sure all windows are fully closed before leaving your vehicle.
• Use/install anti-theft devices when possible: Investing in steering wheel locks, and alarm systems, can deter potential thieves and increase the chances of recovering your vehicle if it is stolen.
• Lock your car doors: It may seem obvious, but always double-check that your doors are locked before leaving your vehicle.
