Important Reminder: Phishing Scam Targeting VCCS Students

November 25, 2024 / Our Nighthawks

This is just a reminder to be diligent when online. There was a recent phishing scam targeting VCCS students, including NOVA students

Scammers contacted a NOVA student pretending to be a professor and asking whether the student would be interested in an administrative position at the college. The student submitted a resume and other documents. They were then sent checks “to purchase office supplies.” These checks were disputed and the student has been told they now owe the money back.

Please review online safety with your students and let them know if they are contacted unexpectedly and 1) offered a job or internship they didn’t apply for, 2) asked to provide personal or financial information or 3) given contact information that doesn’t seem right, please tell them to STOP and get support. Do not click any links, do not reply and do not give any personal information.

Assure them they are not alone. If a student tells you they have been contacted by a scammer—or if you have—have them reach out to NOVA’s 24/7 Police Dispatch at 703-764-5000 for assistance.

Stay safe!
