NOVA Online Up Close: The Critical Role of Ongoing Training for Distance Learning Faculty
As the demand for asynchronous and synchronous courses grows, ensuring high-quality course delivery is essential. At NOVA Online, we are committed to supporting NOVA faculty with the tools, training and resources they need to meet the diverse needs of our Nighthawks. One of the cornerstones of this commitment is the ongoing professional development of our distance learning faculty—a key requirement of the Council of Regional Accrediting Commissions’ (C-RAC) 21st Century Guidelines for Distance Education.
Why Ongoing Training Matters
At NOVA Online, we believe that training is not just about compliance; it is a commitment to fostering an environment of academic excellence. By engaging in ongoing professional development, faculty and staff can:
- stay current with educational technologies to deliver content effectively and efficiently inside and outside of the classroom;
- enhance online teaching strategies that promote active learning and foster a sense of belonging;
- develop assessment techniques that ensure academic integrity and provide meaningful feedback;
- meet the needs of diverse learners through inclusive practices and adaptive tools.
NOVA Online’s Commitment
At NOVA Online, we have embraced the C-RAC’s guidelines through a robust framework of professional development opportunities, including:
- weekly workshops on emerging technologies and pedagogical strategies;
- certification programs for faculty teaching asynchronous and synchronous courses;
- NOL Certification: This three-week interactive and facilitated course is designed to prepare faculty for teaching at NOVA Online. Topics include communication strategies, Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) and best practices for discussion boards and feedback.
- Hybrid Certification: This four-week facilitated course helps faculty prepare for teaching hybrid courses. Topics include blended learning, course mapping, online-focused syllabus creation and developing initial course modules.
- Access to expert consultations with instructional designers and technologists.
Additionally, NOVA Online is proud to share that, in the new year, we will be proposing the creation of an Excellence in Distance Learning Ad Hoc Workgroup to further refine and expand faculty and student supports.
The Impact on Our Students
As NOVA Online continues to grow, so does our responsibility to uphold the highest standards of excellence in distance education. By providing ongoing faculty training, we reinforce our commitment to innovative online pedagogy and advancing student success.
