NOVA Students Take Second in AMATYC Student Research League Competition!
A team of students from Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) took Second Place at the national level in the 2024 American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) Student Research League. The team, consisting of Luciana Ascarrunz, Flynn Essex and Benjamin Yam, was mentored by Professor Matthew Westerhoff. The research problem was to use mathematical modeling to devise a program for a chosen urban city’s transition to renewable energy. The students were recognized at the 50th AMATYC Annual Conference. Benjamin Yam, a dedicated member of the Math Club, recently organized an integration bee and achieved Eighth place nationally in the AMATYC Student Mathematics League. Both Flynn Essex and Luciana Ascarrunz are honors students who have completed Honors Calculus II and Honors Differential Equations under Professor Westerhoff.
For students interested in joining the NOVA (Manassas) Math Club or participating in next year’s AMATYC Student Research League or Student Mathematics League, please email MWesterhoff@nvcc.edu.
