Preparing for Online Instruction During a Code Purple
In a Code Purple operating status, all NOVA campuses operate virtually, with classes and services online only. Faculty are expected to have a clear plan for continuing instruction during emergency closures lasting more than a day.
When a closure occurs, faculty should notify students of the alternative delivery approach as soon as possible. Posting an announcement in Canvas is a great way to provide updates, share Zoom links and explain any adjustments to lectures, assignments or assessments.
- Leverage Canvas Tools: Set up modules, announcements, discussion boards and assignments for seamless online instruction
- Prepare for Live and Recorded Lectures: Familiarize yourself with Zoom for synchronous teaching or prepare recorded lectures.
- Use Flexible Assessment Options: Plan for online quizzes, assignments, or alternative assessments that can be easily adapted during closures.
- Use Canvas announcements and the Inbox to share updates about ongoing changes.
- Test Technology: Ensure all tools, links and resources are functional
- Encourage Student Familiarity: Provide early guidance to students on how to access course materials and participate in virtual instruction.
Being prepared helps ensure learning continues without interruption, making it easier for both faculty and students to adapt to closures. If you need assistance setting up your Canvas courses, please contact the CETSS Course Design team and refer to the CETSS Toolkit resources available to faculty.
