NOVA’s Office of Employee Wellness and Wellbeing (OEWW) continues to provide resources to help you achieve financial independence as your financial wellness remains a priority in 2025. Our Financial Wellness Partner, Virginia’s Department of Human Resource Management (DHRM) offers a variety of resources to help you plan your future (and your present). Check out the DHRM January financial wellness newsletter and the highlighted items below to learn more about the financial education offerings and resources.

January 2025 Spotlights:

Virginia Retirement System (VRS). Already thinking about spring break? If you’re dreaming of a springtime getaway, check out Five Budgeting Tips for Your Family for Spring Break. Discover how to save on vacation purchases—and why you may want to avoid tourist hotspots. For more tips, log in to your myVRS account and select Financial Wellness.

Virginia Credit Union. Year-End Financial Health Score (Self-Guided). Track the progress of your financial health with an end of the year financial health score. Click on the link to access the Financial Health Survey.

Planning a “Winter” Vacation? Check out Banzai, designed to empower state employees on their journey toward financial confidence. Virginia State Employee Assistance Fund (VSEAF). The Virginia State Employee Assistance Fund provides grants to eligible state employees suffering from a financial crisis or an unplanned emergency/or unplanned event that impacts the employee or family members living in the residence of the employee. The VSEAF is a recognized 501c(3) charity member of the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC), Code 203040. See if you qualify here!

Not new, but worth mentioning:

NOVA Employee Emergency Assistance Fund. The NOVA Employee Emergency Assistance Fund was created to assist NOVA employees who are experiencing temporary financial hardship. The NOVA Employee Emergency Assistance Fund is possible because of the support of the NOVA Educational Foundation and NOVA employees.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP). All health plans offered to state employees and their dependents have employee assistance programs (EAPs). Included are up to four sessions at no charge for such services as mental health, alcohol or drug abuse assessment, child or elder care, financial, grief counseling and legal services such as estate planning.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF). State employees may be eligible for the PSLF Program. Keep reading to see whether you might qualify. The PSLF Program forgives the remaining balance on your Direct Loans after you have made 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time for a qualifying employer. Virginia Department of Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Division. Have you checked to see if you’re missing out on money? TRS offers a user friendly website and the secure document upload feature, making claiming your funds quicker than ever before! Unclaimed property can include dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, stocks and dividends, insurance proceeds, refunds, and more.
