Handling Media Interviews

January 23, 2025 / General NOVA News

Members of the media may occasionally ask NOVA faculty or staff to speak on the record about NOVA decisions, policies, actions or other institutional matters. NOVA has published formal guidance that explains how to respond to such requests.

Why it matters:
NOVA’s media relations policy and procedures strive to ensure that media and the public receive accurate information about the college from designated spokespersons without limiting employees’ First Amendment rights to express personal opinions.

How the procedures work:

  • If a reporter contacts you directly with questions about NOVA, contact the Office of Communications and Enrollment Marketing. The director or associate director of external and executive communications will evaluate the request and determine the most appropriate spokesperson.
  • If a reporter contacts you about your academic discipline or subject-matter expertise, you are not required to contact Communications and Enrollment Marketing. You are free, if you choose, to respond as an individual expressing your opinions.

What happens next?
The Office of Communications and Enrollment Marketing monitors media coverage and looks for opportunities to highlight faculty and staff expertise. If you do accept a media interview, Communications and Enrollment Marketing staff are happy to review your talking points and prepare you to answer a reporter’s questions.
