Task force on probationary students update

March 7, 2025 / General NOVA News

The Ad Hoc Task Force on Academic Probation was established by the provosts and Dr. Joel Frater, VP of Student Affairs, to “make recommendations to improve processes for students on probation.” The large number of students placed on academic probation each semester, and a shift in dedicated academic success staffing has challenged our ability to provide each student with an assigned counselor/coach for support and guidance. Additionally, the fall project by InsideTrack identified that students on academic probation find the process of returning to NOVA challenging.

This task force has met once, thus far, and established four sub-committees (research of peer institutions; data; process (current) for students and staffing; and input from students) in order to holistically investigate and develop recommendations. We look forward to diligent work over the months of March and April to deliver a report that will inform process enhancements to robustly support students toward realizing their academic success.
