NOVA’s Fall 2024 Student Conduct Summary
Northern Virginia Community College strives to maintain a safe and secure campus in alignment with its values of inclusion and care. At NOVA, student conduct is committed to the safety and wellbeing of our college community. Unlike a court of law, which is more punitive, student conduct in higher education is instructional in nature. NOVA’s approach is to resolve incidents of misconduct and to help facilitate education and student development.
The purpose of this report is to summarize aggregate student conduct activity from the fall 2024 semester while ensuring compliance with FERPA. To help with interpretation of the data being presented, please refer to Appendix A.
The data presented is reflected in percentages and raw numbers and highlights the individual who is submitting a report (ex. Faculty, Staff, NOVA PD, etc.). Also noted in the data is a breakdown of the percentage of cases that are coming from each campus and the sanctions that have been assigned to those found responsible for misconduct. When a violation of the student code of conduct report is submitted, individuals such as the person of concern/violator, witnesses, victims and the reporter can all be listed in a report. However, the data being presented in this report does not include witnesses or victims.
Please note that only conduct cases are included in this data. It does not include data for academic integrity or Title IX. Misconduct that is reported via the violation of the student code of conduct reporting form may fall under Academic Integrity or Title IX. In these situations, the incident is referred to the appropriate office (academic Integrity or Title IX) for their review. If the misconduct reaches the threshold of academic integrity or Title IX, the respective office will be responsible for addressing the reported misconduct. Incidents involving students needing assistance (that are not conduct related) are addressed by the Office of Wellness and Mental Health and the respective campuses Care Team.
