Submissions are OPEN for the Spring 2020 NOVA Honors Symposium!

What It Is

The NOVA Honors Symposium is an opportunity for all NOVA  Honors students, as well as students in varied NOVA Honors societies, to showcase their academic work, gain experience presenting in the context of an academic conference, and build unity and connections with like-minded Honors students from all NOVA campuses.

This semester’s symposium will be held on Friday, March 6th from 12:00 PM to 3:30 PM on the Loudoun campus. THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING A PROPOSAL FOR CONSIDERATION is Friday, February 21st at 11:59 PM EST. MONETARY PRIZES WILL BE AWARDED FOR THE TOP TALKS!

We will consider the quality of your written proposal when we review it for acceptance, and late submissions WILL NOT be considered. If you have any questions, please direct them to your campus Honors Lead Faculty member.  Confirmation of acceptance of your presentation will be sent to your NOVA email on Friday, Feb. 28.

By submitting a proposal, you acknowledge that you are available to present at anytime between 12:00PM and 3:00PM on the day of the Symposium (March 6), and that you will be present and on-site for the entire duration of the event.

Eligibility and Presentation Requirements

To be eligible, all presenters must satisfy one of the eligibility criteria listed below. Late arrival to the event location will result in disqualification. Presentations will be scheduled in 15 minute intervals. Students will have 10-12 minutes for the oral presentation; presentations that are less than 8 minutes or over 12 minutes will be disqualified.  The remaining time is  for Q&A.  All presentations will end at 15 minutes. All presentations must have a Works Cited page (in print or on slide). Visual aids, such as PowerPoint or Prezi, are recommended but not required. If selected for an award, eligible awardees should be prepared to provide proof of their home address at the Symposium.

ELIGIBILITY

Participants must satisfy ONE of the following criteria to participate. Please be prepared to indicate by which criterion you are eligible on the proposal form.

Participants must be:

  • currently taking a course for Honors credit in this Spring, 2020 semester, or
  • NOVA Honors Program Student, as designated by the HNRP student group code, or
  • an officially designated member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society, or
  • an officially designated member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars,
  • a currently enrolled student at NOVA with a GPA of 3.5 or greater with a minimum of 12 completed NOVA credits. If you are submitting in this category, please contact your campus Honors Lead Faculty person prior to submission.

**Previous Symposium awardees are welcome to participate, and are not eligible to receive a cash award. Students will receive constructive feedback following the Symposium.

The NOVA Honors Fall 2019 Symposium NOW ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS!

NOVA Honors Students, Faculty, Staff, and Supporters!

NOVA Honors is proud to announce that we are now accepting submissions for the 2019 Fall NOVA Honors Symposium! Our symposium is in its 7th year, and we couldn’t be happier about the continued success of this event!

The symposium will be held on Friday, October 25th from 12:00PM to 4:00PM, and will begin in room CA-302 on the NOVA Annandale Campus. The submission deadline is 5:00PM, Friday, October 18th. Who is eligible to participate? We accept submission from the following students:

  • NOVA Honors Program Students (HNRP Student Group)
  • Students taking courses for Honors credit in the Fall 2019 semester
  • Members of the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society
  • Members of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars
  • Students with a confirmed GPA of 3.5 or higher with a minimum of 6 college credits AND recommendation of campus Honors Lead Faculty member
