Spanish 101- Beginning Spanish

Beginning Spanish, a basic introductory course, places emphasis on the development of proficiency in the following skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The student will learn to function in the language within a limited context of vocabulary and structures. The course includes a general introduction to culture.

SPA 101 is offered as a 16 week course and a 12 week course

Spanish 102- Beginning Spanish II

Spanish 201- Intermediate Spanish

This intermediate Spanish course further develops the communication skills to an intermediate proficiency level. This course introduces the student to Hispanic literary works and continues the study of Hispanic customs and culture.

Entry level competencies: The prerequisite for this course is SPA 102- Beginning Spanish II or equivalent.

SPA 201 is offered as a 16-week course,  a 12-week course, and an 8-week course

Spanish 202- Intermediate Spanish II

Intermediate Spanish II continues developing your knowledge of the Spanish language with emphasis on the development of proficiency in the following skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This course also familiarizes you with the culture and customs of the Spanish-speaking world.

Entry Level Competencies: The prerequisite for this course is SPA 201 – Beginning Spanish II or equivalent.

SPA 202 is offered as a 16-week course,  a 12-week course, and an 8-week course

Spanish 163 – Spanish for Health Professionals

This course is designed to introduce individuals in the health sciences professions, such as: doctors, nurses, paramedical personnel, and health care providers with the language and culture skills necessary to communicate with Spanish-speaking patients within a basic context of vocabulary and structures. You will develop correct Spanish pronunciation and an awareness of cultural differences and needs. This course will help you to communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking patients on basic topics related to:

  • Greeting and salutations
  • Personal administrative informantion
  • A patient’s medical history
  • Medical services and procedures
  • Basic anatomy and physical conditions
  • Illnesses
  • Emergency services
  • Cultural perspectives impacting on health care

You will learn by developing a basic knowledge of Spanish grammar, acquiring conversational skills in topics related to the medical profession, and understanding cultural differences and their impact on the medical profession.

What you learn in this course will benefit you in your medical profession. You will be able to better serve those entrusted to your care and overcome language and cultural barriers.

SPA 163 is offered as a 16-week course,  a 12-week course

Spanish 164 – Spanish for Health Professionals
