In the realm of transformative experiences, the story of Miguel Romero Rosas (Colombia, Houston Community College, Information Technology, 2017-18) stands as a testament to the power of education, innovation, and global collaboration.
Miguel is a software systems engineer and a current Ph.D. candidate from the Department of Computer Engineering at the University of Delaware. He has spoken about science and technology projects both nationally and internationally, and in 2020, he was one of the developers for a COVID-19 software project called UCCare, which aimed to develop software for managing epidemiological measures within institutions, universities, and organizations in Colombia to combat the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The software proved highly effective, benefiting over 7,000 individuals in the city of Cali. Additionally, Miguel has worked on several STEM and leadership initiatives with the U.S. Embassy in Colombia and the University of Houston.
Currently, Miguel is working on a project supported by the National Science Foundation called ICICLE. The initiative is led by The Ohio State University and focuses on expanding access to artificial intelligence (AI). According to Miguel, it holds the promise of advancing AI education and accessibility to empower individuals with AI knowledge and skills to solve current challenges that our world faces.
Perhaps Miguel’s most impactful achievement is his own initiative, called “Tech for Democracy”, a project that stems from his experience in the CCI Program. In 2018, Miguel created an Action Plan under the name “Tech Camp”, an initiative that offered young people the opportunity to participate in various science and technology projects alongside students from different nationalities, all through a learning program sponsored by the University of Houston and Kids Lives Matter International. One of the primary goals of the initiative was to provide young people with opportunities to strengthen their abilities in critical thinking, science, engineering, and mathematics. This served as the foundation of his idea; however, over the years, the concept evolved as he continued to grow both personally and professionally.
After two years of involvement in the initiative, he decided to incorporate human rights, conflict resolution, and political sciences into the program. “These areas play a significant role in both the economic and social development of Colombia. Inspiring young Colombians to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and become future representatives of Colombia is crucial for supporting the scientific infrastructure in the country and driving economic change. Furthermore, it is essential to inspire scientific research to accelerate the development of innovative solutions to global challenges using technology and promote the training of Colombian ambassadors to improve the quality of life in the Colombia territory and around the world.”
Today, “Tech for Democracy” focuses on two of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Quality Education and Peace and Justice. On November 8th, 2023, Miguel, who was chosen by the Consulate of Europe, presented his initiative at the World Forum for Democracy in Strasbourg, France. Honored with the role as a delegate speaker, Miguel delved into the heart of European democracy by speaking inside the European Parliament and engaging with influential figures such as France’s Ambassador to the Council of Europe, Pap Ndiaye. Representing Colombia, Miguel had the opportunity to show the impact of “Tech for Democracy”, sharing his goal to foster positive change and empower young individuals in their academic pursuits. Regarding his project, Miguel stated, “We believe that informed and motivated youth can drive positive change in their communities and beyond. We believe that a thriving democracy relies on the active involvement of its citizens, especially its youth. Through education and active participation, we aim to instill a sense of civic duty and responsibility among our participants. ‘Tech for Democracy’ is a multifaceted initiative designed to empower young Colombians, providing them with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities needed to excel academically, engage actively in their communities, and contribute positively to the future of Colombia.”
Miguel’s passion for education and technology drives him to explore innovative ways of enhancing learning experiences, fostering a deep commitment to empowering individuals through knowledge and technological advancements. Since completing the CCI Program in 2018, Miguel has made a significant mark in the lives of countless people, striving to increase educational and STEM opportunities for Colombian youth. He stated, “The person I have become today owes much to the remarkable individuals who played a pivotal role in my educational and professional development, and I must emphasize that CCI was undoubtedly one of them. My experience was truly transformative.”
Miguel Romero Rosas’ journey is a shining example of the potential unleashed through international educational programs like the CCI Program. His story reflects the transformative impact of education and the ripple effect it can have on individuals who, in turn, contribute positively to their communities and the world at large. As Miguel steps onto the global stage, we anticipate the echoes of his message resonating far beyond, inspiring others to strive for positive change and empowerment.
