Annandale Lyceum Presents Discussion on Redistricting Amendment

September 25, 2020 / Events

A discussion about the Virginia ballot initiative to amend the Constitution to create a redistricting commission will be presented on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 12:30 p.m. by the Annandale Campus Lyceum Committee. This is part of the fall 2020 semester Lunch and Learn-Justice and Equity Series via Zoom.

“The issue of Gerrymandering will be on the ballot for Virginia voters this year with a constitutional amendment question about redistricting,” said Lyceum Committee Chair Melissa Chabot, communication studies instructor (AN). “We are excited to welcome proponents of both sides of the issue to speak at our next Lyceum event.”

Registration is required in advance for this presentation and registration information can be found on the Lyceum Committee blog. On registering, a confirmation e-mail will be sent that contains the Zoom link to join the presentation.

“Gerrymandering and Equity: ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ on Virginia’s Redistricting Amendment” will offer two perspectives. Brian Cannon from Fair Maps Virginia will present the case for voting “Yes” on 2020 Virginia Constitutional Amendment #1 and Trevor Southerland from Fair Districts Virginia will present the case for a “No” vote.

“The proposed amendment is controversial and the implications for equity and justice are important to consider,” Chabot said. “Hopefully, this discussion will not only encourage civic engagement within the NOVA community, but it will also help attendees determine how they will vote on Amendment #1.”

The Lyceum virtual Lunch and Learn Justice and Equity Series presentations via Zoom are open to faculty, staff, students and anyone else who would like to register for any or all of them. There are also two Lyceum presentations in November.
