DREAM Scholar Application Opportunity

Achieving the Dream’s DREAM Scholars program is an experiential learning opportunity for up to eight students from participating Achieving the Dream Institutions, designed to enhance key leadership, critical thinking, and networking skills. Selected students attend ATD’s annual convening, DREAM, where they talk with experts, share their educational experiences, and attend sessions on improving student success, institutional governance, teaching and learning, administration, and more. The 2020 DREAM Scholars application deadline is November 26th.  ATD Core Team Leaders nominate and submit the application via an online form. Visit our website for more information about the program and to submit an application.

Phi Theta Kappa Induction Ceremony, Wednesday, October 16, 2019

Congratulations to our Fall 2019 Tau Nu Officers on an exciting and successful Phi Theta Kappa Induction Ceremony!  The ceremony was led by  co-advisors, Professor Emblom-Callahan and Professor Grant. The Key Note Speaker of the evening was Dr. McClellan, Dean of Languages, Arts, and Social Sciences, whom prepared a invigorating speech to the chapter’s inductees. The Tau Nu Chapter welcomed 16 new students into the Phi Theta Kappa Society on Wednesday, October 16, 2019.

PTK Meeting

Hello Phi Theta Kappans,

We are happy to announce that we will be having our meeting every first Monday of the each month starting at 5pm to 7pm in room 255.

We will be sharing ideas about possible service, any activities, fundraising ideas, and your opinion are very important to us. It will also be a great opportunity to meet other Phi Theta Kappa members and answer any questions you might have.

An Invitation to Eligible Members

You have achieved a level of academic success at NOVA that makes you eligible to join the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society (completed at least 12 credits, earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5, currently enrolled).   You received an email invitation with an access code to join the Honor Society in the second week of September but you haven’t joined yet.  Why haven’t you joined?  Here’s some additional information:

Phi Theta Kappa is the officially recognized Honor Society for two year college students across the country.   You are being recognized for what you have already accomplished academically.  There is a one-time membership fee of $85 which covers the international, Virginia regional and chapter local dues.  Joining the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society does not mean a commitment to get involved in chapter activities!   This is a recognition of what you have already achieved.

Benefits

  • You will receive a packet with your membership card, a certificate and a newsletter
  • “Phi Theta Kappa Member” will be typed on your official transcript at NOVA
  • You are eligible to apply for Phi Theta Kappa scholarships at many four year universities across the country (see more information on scholarships, below).
  • You are eligible to purchase the gold stole and tassel to wear at your commencement
  • Your campus chapter has opportunities for leadership and community service involvement, which enhances your scholarship and transfer competitiveness
  • We will be recruiting chapter officers for next year and two of those students interested in serving as officers next year will be invited to participate in the Phi Theta Kappa International Convention in April, to be held in Kansas City, Missouri

Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Scholarships (Examples)

  • George Washington University ($7,500 – $15,000) competitive
  • Marymount University ($2,000) automatic with letter from PTK advisor.  With leadership and service experience, scholarship could be increased to $6,000
  • Liberty University ($1,000 per year up to four years) competitive
  • American University ($10,000) automatic/guaranteed
  • ODU offers 10 merit PTK scholarships per year

Orientation Information

Your Tau Nu Chapter officers at the Alexandria Campus have scheduled dates where they will be available this week to meet you in the Cafeteria, to share information about Phi Theta Kappa and answer your questions.   The dates/times are:

Wednesday, October 11 – 3:30 to 6:30 pm

Thursday, October 12 – 11:00 am to 12:30 pm and 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm

Induction Ceremony

The Induction of New Members will be held on Wednesday evening, November 1st at 7:00 pm in the Bisdorf Auditorium (Room 196).  This is a formal ceremony which includes guest speakers and a reception following the ceremony.   New members can bring at least two guests to the ceremony.  An invitation will be sent an invitation to the Induction Ceremony once they join Phi Theta Kappa.
