National Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes the achievements and contributions of Americans of Hispanic and Latino ancestry – those whose families originated in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Between September 15th and October 15th we celebrate their culture, history, literature, art, music, cuisine and more. You may wonder why this “month” starts and ends on the 15th day of two months. Many significant anniversaries take place during this time. September 15th marks the independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. On the 16th and 18th, Mexico and Chile, respectively, celebrate their independence. The month ends just after Columbus Day or Día de la Raza on October 12th.
The library is celebrating National Hispanic Month with a book display in our reading room (the room with comfortable seating and magazines facing the lake). The display features more details about the origin of the celebration as well as information on food, culture, art and literature. It showcases books on all of these topics, including some written in Spanish. You can actually check these books out, so don’t feel shy about taking some from our display. Drop by and take a look!
