NOVACARD

Be sure to get a NOVACARD, even if you are only at NOVA for the summer. The NOVACARD isn’t just your campus ID. It is used to checkout books, borrow laptops, pay for printing (Yes, here at NOVA you must pay for printing and copying.) and use many resources.  Just add money to your NOVACARD and you will be ready to get your work done quickly. Don’t leave it in your car – bring it with you to the library!

Check it out!

Our talented Collection Development Librarian, Elizabeth Dellavedova, created this nifty video to highlight what students can find at the Circulation Desk.  She used the free version of Animoto – a simple and fun web tool that weaves photos together to make a video.  Check it out!  It will be 33 seconds of your time well spent.  Maybe it will inspire you to make your own video slideshow!

ESL Students Speak Out About National Library Week

ESL professor Shirley Nuhn and her students from ESL 33 are helping the NOVA Annandale Library celebrate National Library Week, which runs from April 8th-14th, and School Library Month, which spans the entire month of April. This year’s official American Library Association-sanctioned theme is “You Belong @ Your Library”. Take a few moments and listen to these students talk about why they feel they belong at their library, and find out about some of the resources that the library has to offer you – for school, for work, or for home.

Auspicious Bloom

The two resident corn plants (Dracaena fragrans), located by the south entrance of the library, are in bloom!  When in bloom, the surrounding air is filled with a burst of floral fragrance – but only in the evening and sometimes the early morning.  I have never seen (much less smelled) a corn plant in bloom before.  Naturally my curiosity led me to our plant expert and Circulation Specialist, Supie Wolf.  Supie shared (and I am re-sharing) the following informative piece written about the blooming corn plants.  This piece was written by Librarian, Paula DeRoy for our library’s 2009 Spring newsletter.

While it looks like we’re on the tail end of this round of sweet smells, we should get another burst of bloom and fragrance later on this year!
