The Greenback is the College Financial Aid Office’s quarterly newsletter.

If I drop, audit, stop attending a class, or withdraw, will I have to repay my financial aid?

Repaying or keeping your financial aid depends on a variety of factors including the type of aid you were awarded, when the change occurred, and if you are still enrolled in other classes.  It also depends on if you did not attend a class, dropped a class before the census date, or if you withdrew.  In some cases, enrollment changes may result in you owing a balance to the college as described below.

Spear Phishing Scammers Want More from You

“I’m calling from [pick any bank]. Someone’s been using your debit card ending in 2345 at [pick any retailer]. I’ll need to verify your Social Security number — which ends in 8190, right? — and full debit card information so we can stop this unauthorized activity…”

So the caller ID shows the name of your bank. And the caller knows some of your personal details. Does that mean it’s legit? No. It’s a scam — and scammers are counting on the call being so unsettling that you might not stop to check your bank statement.

Helpful Tips to Manage Your Student Loans

Do You Still Have a Financial Aid Pending (FAP) on Your Account?

If you still have a Financial Aid Pending (FAP) hold on your account, you probably have not completed the financial aid process or your anticipated financial aid is not enough to cover your balance.  If so:

  • Please review your myNOVA To Do List and submit any items that may have been requested.
  • If you were already awarded, please review your anticipated aid based on your current enrollment and pay any balance that is not covered by financial aid. Instructions for viewing anticipated financial aid are available here.
  • If you are using a Direct Loan to cover your balance, remember to accept the amount you wish to borrow for Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 on myNOVA and complete the Entrance Counseling and Master Promissory Note at https://studentloans.gov. The amount accepted will be evenly divided between the fall and spring semesters and a nominal loan fee will be deducted before funds are applied toward your account.  Instructions for accepting a loan are available here.

To prevent classes from potentially dropping for non-payment, students must be awarded enough anticipated financial aid to cover their balance or they must make other payment arrangements before the Financial Aid Pending (FAP) hold on their account expires.

As a reminder, you should attend all classes for which you are registered, whether aid has been awarded or not.  If you do not wish to take a particular class, you should drop it on myNOVA before the census date to avoid being charged for it.
