Job Description

The position provides technical support to the Horticulture program at the Eastern Shore Agricultural Research and Extension Center (AREC), located in Painter, Virginia. This is an off-campus position. The successful candidate will help with the establishment and maintenance of field trials, data collection, organization of laboratory workflow, and supervision of part-time employees, undergraduate and graduate students.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Plant Science (Horticulture/Agronomy) or a combination of education and extensive experience in a related field; Computer proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive etc.); Self-motivated to conduct field research including experimental layout, planting, maintenance, harvest and data collection; Ability to manage and maintain the Horticulture Research Laboratory and Greenhouse including equipment, instruments, chemicals, labware, etc.; Knowledge of production agriculture and farm practices; Ability to train and manage hourly employees and student labor. The successful candidate must have or be able to obtain and maintain a Virginia Driver’s license and a Virginia pesticide applicator license within six months of start date.

Preferred Qualifications

Utilization of tractors, harvesters, tillers, fertilizers/sprayers and other agricultural based equipment; MS degree in Plant Science (Horticulture/Agronomy).
