Job Title: Groundskeeper
Part-time/full-time
Job Summary:
The Groundskeeper performs landscaping tasks to maintain the facility’s grounds at Columbia Gardens Cemetery, located in Arlington VA. Columbia Gardens Cemetery is a Level 2 Arboretum with open gardens to the public and an active event center for guest.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None.
Duties/ Responsibilities:
Mows lawns, trims weeds, and rakes leaves as assigned.
Maintain flower and shrub beds by weeding and mulching.
Picks up and removes trash.
Trims / prune bushes, shrubs, hedges, and trees. Also, dead head flowers and cut back ornamental grasses.
Prepares soil and plants: flowers, bushes, hedges, shrubs, and trees.
Aid in managing the Rose Garden (pruning, fertilizing, preventative spraying, etc.)
Applies fertilizer and possibly some pesticides (under supervision).
Snow removal tasks in winter months: shoveling sidewalks, steps, and doorways and applying ice melt when needed.
Help with cemetery events: setting up chairs and tents.
Performs routine maintenance on power equipment.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Ability to operate various types of power equipment including lawnmowers, trimmers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, and other landscaping equipment (will train if needed).
Ability to use hand tools required for landscaping.
Ability to follow instructions and complete assignments.
Knowledge of landscaping techniques and processes.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Background in Landscape or Horticulture experience preferred.
On-the-job training offered.
Physical Requirements:
Prolonged periods walking, standing, bending, stretching, pushing, pulling, climbing ladders, or kneeling.
Must be physically able to operate power equipment.
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions.
