About

The Reva A. Savkar ADVANCE Science Scholarship provides an award of $1000 to one student each year.  The student must have completed at least the Fall 2020 semester in the NOVA ADVANCE program and be currently enrolled in ADVANCE.  The student must be in a NOVA AS in Science degree program leading to a George Mason University BS in Astronomy, Atmospheric Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Forensic Science, Neuroscience, or Physics.  The student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or higher.

NOVA Professor Emerita Reva A. Savkar, winner of the 2013 VCCS Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence, established this scholarship to recognize that there can be no excellence in teaching without excellence in learning by students. Professor Savkar and her husband, NOVA Professor Emeritus Robert C. Loser, wish to honor and support students who best exemplify commitment to outstanding learning in progress toward careers in science.

“We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop”. – Mother Teresa

Professor Savkar presented at the 2015 White House National Teachers’ Day Ceremony.
