Frequently Asked Questions

How much tutoring can I have?

Students are allowed up to two hours per course, per week for one-on-one appointments. You can attend additional drop-in hours when a tutor is available.

What classes do you offer tutoring for?

This will change depending on which tutors we are able to retain from semester to semester. If we don’t have a tutor for your class, you are able to schedule a virtual appointment with a tutor from another campus, or you can go to that campus if you prefer in-person appointments. Click here to see which classes we currently offer.

What is the scheduling window?

You are able to schedule an appointment up to two weeks in advance, but no sooner than 12 hours before your desired appointment time.

What’s the difference between an appointment and a drop-in?

An appointment will be a one-on-one between you and the tutor, whether in-person or virtually with Zoom. Drop-ins are in-person at the tutoring center and are not guaranteed to be available immediately. If there are other students in need of help, the tutor may go back and forth to help multiple students during drop-in times.

I want a same-day appointment, is that possible?

Maybe. This is dependent on a few factors. First, we will see if there is a drop-in tutor available for your course. If not, if there is a tutor with an opening in their schedule, we can see if they will be available to accommodate you last minute. Only a staff member will be able to override the system and schedule an appointment within the 12 hour window. Please call us at 703-948-7693 for a same day request.

Why can’t I have more than 2 hours per course per week of tutoring?

This limit is set to ensure that all students have fair access to the tutors and that a small number of students aren’t filling all of the appointment slots. If you feel you need additional time there are other options such as drop-in hours, going to your professor’s office hours, forming a study group, or tutor.com which can be accessed through Canvas.

Will the tutor help me with my homework?

Tutors will not help with graded work, which can be found in our tutoring center policies. Tutors can, however, look over your homework that is already completed and see if you did it correctly and help guide you on any changes that need to be made.

What if I have to cancel my appointment?

We request that you cancel your appointment ASAP so that the slot can open up for another student. You are able to cancel the appointment yourself through Navigate, or you can contact us by phone (703-948-7693) or email (loudountutoring@nvcc.edu) and we will cancel it for you.

What if I don’t show up for my appointment without canceling?

If you no-show your appointment, this will count against you. After three (3) no-shows you will be blocked from scheduling an appointment for 30 days and will only be allowed to come to drop-in hours. This is to ensure that the tutors’ time isn’t being wasted when another student could have filled the slot.
