History of Women in Jazz and Notes at Noon

On Monday, March 16th the Student Life Office brought Galen Abdur-Razzaq to the Alexandria campus for a lecture on a History of Women in Jazz and a performance of Notes at Noon.  Galen is a talented flutist from Montclair, New Jersey who has performed both domestically and internationally for over thirty years. Galens Photo 1

He is also an arranger, composer, director, educator, and writer.  Galen’s interactive lecture highlighted the significant contribution of women in jazz.  Women highlighted included Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, Mary Lou Williams and Anita O’Day.

Staff and students were encouraged to participate and were given the opportunity to win jazz CDs for their participation.

After the lecture, staff and students were invited to stay for a performance with local jazz musicians Amy Shook and Frank Russo.  Amy plays the upright bass and plays in a Trio with Frank who plays the drums.  Together with Galan they played a number of jazz classics.

State Senator Adam Ebbin’s Visits the Alexandria Campus

State Senator Adam Ebbin came to the Alexandria campus to talk to Professor David Miller’s Cultural Geography (Geo 210) class on Thursday, March 19. Senator Ebbin represents the 30th district (parts of Alexandria, Arlington, and Fairfax) as a Democratic member of the Virginia Senate. His district borders the Potomac River from National Airport to Mount Vernon and includes part of NOVA’s Alexandria campus. He spoke to students about gerrymandering, the Virginia Senate, and his bills in the recent legislative session.

WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH Dr. Erin FoleyDr. Erin Foley to speak for Women’s History Month.  College students want many things: fun, friends, success, and an opportunity to find their own way toward a fulfilling, happy life. Dr. Foley teaches students how to build a STRONG LIFE.  She delivers messages aimed at helping students go after their opportunities with strength, confidence and an eye toward what’s possible.

Sponsored by the Student life Office, Dr. Foley will be conducting two programs: “The Fearless Female and the Freedom to Be Happy” and “Strong Lives Lead to Happy Lives.”

JAZZ 4 JUSTICE

The Music Department of NOVA’s Alexandria Campus is proud to present the 2nd Annual Jazz4Justice concert on Tuesday April 7th, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. in the Schlesinger Center.

Jazz4Justice is a partnership between the Alexandria Bar Association and the Music Department to raise money for Legal Services of Northern Virginia, the Bar Foundation, and music scholarships at NOVA.

NOVA’s Alexandria Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of John Kocur, will perform a program of jazz big band music featuring student and faculty musicians.

The event is free and no tickets are required however a $15 donation is suggested. Last year’s event was a huge success so we invite you to come out and enjoy some good music for a good cause.

Student Activities Board interest meeting

Calling all students who are interested in event planning and participating in Student Life activities!! If you want to see more events on campus and help organize those events, Student Life invites you to an interest meeting for a Student Activities Board.

The Student Activities Board will work with the Student Life Office to plan and executive weekly small event and large-scale events such as NOVA Day, Halloween Dance, Valentine’s Day Celebration, and many more events. If you want to see more events on campus and believe you can be a vital member of a Campus Activities Board, attend the meeting!!

There will be an early afternoon meeting and a late afternoon meeting. If you have any questions regarding the meeting or Campus Activities Board, please contact Briana Newstrom (bnewstrom@nvcc.edu) or stop by the Student Life Office AA 134.
