NOVA Alexandria Campus Student Ambassadors lead One Day Immersion Conference in NYC

 

Hello NOVA Alexandria Campus,

October 30, through November 1, a team of twelve NOVA students and two faculty spent three days in NYC, preparing and assisting the One Day Immersion in Media, Entertainment and Technology ( ODI) Conference hosted at Pace University’s Lubin School of Business and produced by Dolly Wolf Enterprises, via financial backing from HBO, The Cable Center, Spectrum Networks and other corporate grants.

Our students worked alongside students from Pace, Fordham and NYU and were the only Community College represented among a field of top university students. NOVA’s team was lauded by Dolly Wolf, CEO, as being the hardest working and most enthusiastic team there.

Our NOVA students were responsible for registration, trafficking, coordinating meetings and workshops, as well as accommodating the needs of over fifty of top executives who donate their time to present panels, workshops and individual coaching sessions for the over three hundred attendees. Our students had personal contact with folks such as John Dickerson of CNN, Kathleen Finch, CEO of Discovery, Jana Henthorn, President of the Cable Center and many other equally impressive and generous executives who donate their time every year.

One of the team’s planning meetings turned into a party with an inspiring impromptu motivational talk from Evan Shapiro, CEO of National Lampoon. All NOVA students had the privilege of being enrolled in the highly selective and limited enrollment leadership workshops by Google, Namic and Spectrum Networks.

After one of the work sessions, the team was treated to the Broadway Show, Hadestown, last year’s winner of 8 Tony awards. This gift, was given by Zenita Henderson, Vice President of Marketing for SCTE. The student team comes at the invitation of Dolly Wolf who first came to Alexandria NOVA twelve years ago via the ground work of Dean Jimmie Mcclellan. She requested that these students be selected and coached by Professor Lucy Holsonbake. Kirstin Riddick of Tilt was also an accompanying and much needed Sponsor.

Student victories in work ethic, camaraderie, humility and kindness don’t just happen due to one class or one teacher. They are representative of our values, of who we are as a community and of the truth in the African adage, “It takes a village.”

We are quite a village.

Shakespeare’s Sister: Women in the Arts

Hello NOVA,

You are cordially invited you to  “Shakespeare’s Sister: Women in the Arts”, a concert that showcases musical, literary and artistic works by women creators.

Throughout history, women have not had equal opportunity to develop their artistic abilities and talents. This program will provide an intimate portrait of female voices through music, poetry, prose and visual art through performances by the NOVA Alexandria Band, Community Chorus, and Jazz Ensemble along with art and design work by NOVA Studio.

NOVA-AL Music Ensembles to play Holiday Concert | Tuesday, 9 December 2014

Celebrate the holiday season listening to much-beloved favorites such as “Sleigh Ride” by Leroy Anderson, “The First Noel,” “Carol of the Bells,” “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” music from “The Polar Express” and more at this year’s Holiday Concert on the Alexandria Campus of Northern Virginia Community College.

Other selections include a Chanukah Cantata and music by W.A. Mozart, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, and Mel Torme.  The musical event will feature the NOVA Community Chorus, the NOVA Alexandria Jazz Ensemble and the Alexandria Band.

TIME: 6:45 p.m. (Pre-Concert Music in the Lobby)
7:30 p.m. (Concert Starts)

COST: The concert is FREE and open to the public.  FREE garage parking will also be available.

Dr. Mark Whitmire selected to direct the ALL-County High School Girls Honors Choir  

Dr. Mark Whitmire (Music, AL) was selected to direct the All-County High School Girls Honors Choir of the Chesterfield County Public Schools. On Tuesday, October 21, he directed seven hours of master classes and rehearsals.

The singers were selected from twelve high schools, several of which have music programs that are among the most highly-regarded in the state.

The culmination of the event was an evening concert directed by Dr. Whitmire.

The Clothesline Project addresses the issue of violence against women by providing a vehicle for the women to express their emotions by decorating a shirt. We are hoping to get enough shirts made to hang around the entire perimeter!

The NOVA Alexandria Band to play Halloween ConcertHalloween Concert Flyer 2014

Spend a night listening to frighteningly good music at the 2014 “Spooktacular Sounds in the Haunted Hall: A Halloween Concert” at the Alexandria Campus of Northern Virginia Community College. Attendees are encouraged to come in costume.

The NOVA Alexandria Band will play a selection of music from various composers, including “In the Hall of the Mountain King” by Edvard Grieg, “Graceful Ghost Rag” by William Bolcom, “Godzilla Eats Las Vegas!” by Eric Whitacre, and “Hammersmith, Op. 52: Prelude and Scherzo” by Gustav Holst.

The band includes both NOVA students and community members. Lisa C. Eckstein, a music instructor at NOVA-Alexandria, will direct the band.
